Understanding Blood Sugar Levels: What Do the Numbers Mean?

Blood sugar readings – they can feel like a confusing mystery, right? Fear not, my friends! RD Russ Powell, your resident diabetes educator bestie here to break it all down for you.

Fasting vs. Feasting: The Blood Sugar Two-Step

There are two main types of blood sugar readings to be aware of:

  • Fasting blood sugar: This is measured after you haven't eaten anything for at least 8 hours (think waking up in the morning before breakfast).

  • Postprandial blood sugar: This is measured after you eat a meal (usually 1-2 hours later).

Target Time! What Those Numbers Mean

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has some target blood sugar ranges, but your doctor might have specific goals for you too. Here's a quick cheat sheet (remember to discuss these with your doctor):

Blood Sugar Range Meaning:

Below 70 mg/dL

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) - Can cause symptoms like shakiness, sweating, and confusion.

70-99 mg/dL

Normal fasting blood sugar

100-125 mg/dL

Prediabetes - This is a warning sign that your blood sugar is higher than normal.

126 mg/dL or higher

Diabetes - This means your body isn't using insulin effectively.

Knowing Your Numbers is Key

Monitoring your blood sugar regularly is crucial for managing diabetes. It helps you see how your body reacts to different foods and activities, and allows you to adjust accordingly. It's also important to be familiar with the signs of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) like increased thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) like shakiness, sweating, and confusion.

HbA1c: The Long-Term Picture

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a blood test that reflects your average blood sugar control over the past 2-3 months. It's a valuable tool for understanding the bigger picture and making adjustments to your management plan.
